The Empty Town

It was the strangest thing. Finn just stopped. In one whirlwind move, he slipped on his pants, zipped them, and stood over me.

“You can rest while I drive,” he muttered.

And that was it.

Now, after changing my underwear, I lie on the bed, trying to figure out how to get past the awkwardness that now exists between us. I knew Finn was a bit strange, but I attributed that to him being a vampire. He’s not Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula or Anne Rice’s Lestat, but neither is he Rice’s Louis. Instead, he’s like that guy, the one every girl has dated at least once, maybe twice if his stinger didn’t hurt badly enough during round one. He’s the most complicated being a girl will ever agree to get involved with. He slips and tells you he loves you, which makes him hate you. Probably because he grew up in his own version of Mommie Dearest. Or worse, he’s the actual depiction of Conrad Jarrett in Ordinary People and a Beth Jarrett is his mother.

Basically, the woman he’s supposed to love most in this world snubbed him, stripping him of all his trust in the female species, and now every woman he comes in contact with has to pay for it. Guys like that sink their claws in us by giving us glimpses of their deep, dark, broken hearts, and all we want to do is fix the unfixable.

I’m kicking myself for crossing that line. Why did I let him make emotional love to me? I should’ve known better. Now I’m going to have to pay for it. That’s if I let him dump on me.

I kick the thick covers off of me. There are four heavy blankets on this bed. He must have laid them over me after I fainted as a way to show his “concern.” I don’t need him taking care of me with one hand and then stabbing me with both hands.

I sit up and look around. There are no windows back here, but I can see that we’re speeding down an unlit two-lane highway with tall bushy trees lining both sides of the road. The sky holds thick, gray and white cumulus clouds. The snow on the ground is melting away, and we zoom across a small bridge with a half-frozen creek slogging along beneath it. I have a feeling we’re heading south.

I knock on the window that separates the front of the truck from the back. The glass slides open.

“What?” he asks. His voice is cold and disengaged, which proves my theory. This vampire has serious mommy issues.

“Where are we going?” My tone is just as chilling, which makes him do a double take in the rearview mirror.

“Lo Creek, Alabama.” This time he sounds less rude—on purpose of course.

“Watch out,” I say. Before he can object, I crawl through the window separating us.

Finn looks shocked, but I don’t care. If he needs all business because he can’t handle more, then that’s what I’ll give him.
